Barcelona – Passion for Life and Passion for Bikes

One thing that keeps striking us on this trip is all the friends we’re finally meeting for the first time after so many emails and calls, some for several years. At every stop we’re met with a new set of warm embraces and friendly smiles. Barcelona was no different.

We’d been emailing back and forth with our buddy Antonio Blanco for over two years and were really looking forward to meeting him in his hometown of Barcelona. (Antonio’s Urban Clothing distributes our DVDs in Spain as well as West Coast Choppers parts and apparel.) We weren’t prepared for the welcoming he had arranged for us! After checking in to our hotel (excellent by the way) we wandered down the street to look for him; he’d told us, “Just go down the street, you can’t miss us” so we just headed down into the neighborhood. As we get to end of the street we see a traditional tapas bar crowded with people enjoying a late afternoon drink and apparently Antonio’s crew has taken over the whole street corner. As we approach the table, a mountain of a man stands up and with a hearty laugh embraces us like we were little children (Antonio played professional rugby in England...’nuff said.) Immediately wine is ordered and we sit down to share a feast of torradas, fried calamari, Serrano ham, mussels and roasted tomatoes...

While Antonio and his crew head back to the office to finish up some work, Scotty and I walk to the beach and reflect on how the trip is going. We were still reveling in the first half of the trip punctuated by the amazing event in Speyer the night before and having never been in Spain, (Catalunya to be exact) we wondered what the next few days held in store. We had a Choppertown screening and party to prepare for and we’d been invited to attend the exclusive Bread & Butter fashion week taking place across from the Royal Palace...well ”invited” might be a term I’m using a bit loosely here...Bread & Butter is one of the most exclusive fashion expos on the planet where everyone from Tommy Hilfiger to Armani unveils their upcoming lines. Our friends from Dickies were having a booth at the event and had said “Come by when you’re in Barcelona!” so we took that as an invitation! One set of hastily prepared “credentials” and a confident “just act like we’re supposed to be here” discussion with the officials at the entry and we were in. We felt a little out of place in our flip-flops and Bermuda shorts, but like we always like to say, “F-ck ‘em if they can’t take a joke!” We caught up to the Dickies gang who were also feeling a bit out of place and were happy to see us; as soon as the show was finished we headed out for more tapas.

The following day we met up with Antonio and headed over to the industrial warehouse turned rock club, Razzamatazz. Honestly, there probably isn’t a more appropriate Choppertown venue on the planet. It was basically like a massive version of Rico’s garage if the welding equipment was replaced by a bar and stage. Antonio had said that he felt pretty confident that some people would show up, but it was getting late and we were a bit nervous. We got a beer across the street in a little dive joint and waited, and waited and waited...8 o’clock, 9 o’clock, is anyone coming?

Now many people don’t realize how late the Catalunyans eat “supper”, actually all over Spain, France and Italy they don’t usually have their big meal of the day until after 9pm which is plenty late by American standards, but in Barcelona they don’t even think about eating until 10pm...which is just about the time it was when we heard it... the first rumble of a V-twin motor blasting up our tiny side street. Antonio just looked up and said with a smile, “You guys gotta trust me!” Within thirty minutes there were a hundred bikes lining both sides of the street. We were introduced to everyone and even presented with handmade plaques commemorating the event...some time later, Kutty was kick-starting his bike on the big screen and a cheer rose into the warm night.

Muchas muchas gracias hermanos. Visca Catalunya.

Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover – Speyer, Germany

The mountains of Austria behind us, we entered a long stretch known as the Autobahn. Porsches and Beemers were flying past (no speed limit in most places) but we were capped at 100kph due to the torpedo on top of the car carrying all our worldly possessions. We pretty much raided Lutz’s entire CD collection on the eight hour drive up to Speyer. Oddly enough, the kitschy Kid Rock song “All Summer Long” is a big hit in Europe right now and we mused on its sampling of "Werewolves in London" and "Sweet Home Alabama". We admittedly even felt a bit homesick as we sang along, boppin’ down the ‘bahn. Lutz introduced us to a great singer named Frank Carrillo and I think we listed to “Roll the Bones” about ten times in a row.

I have to admit that we were pretty tired at this point and hadn’t really heard much about Speyer; hadn’t heard ANYTHING actually. It’s a small to mid-sized town an hour outside of Frankfurt and we kind of viewed it as just a one-night stop on our way to Barcelona... If you hear crunching sounds from now on don’t worry, it’s just the sound of us eating a heaping plate of humble pie...

We found our way to the Flaming Star and had our minds blown. There were already 20 bikes parked in front, mostly cafĂ© racers and a couple old Harleys. Our jaws dropped and the owner ushered us into a scene we still can’t believe. The bar was sort of a gated clubhouse and inside they were having an old-fashioned American-style Bar-Bee-Q. More and more bikes kept showing up and it was absolutely fantastic. Kutty and his family were there and we had a great time catching up and hearing about the various adventures that had taken place over the past ten days (only ten days?!) Legendary pinstriper Herb Martinez was on hand and believe it or not our buddy Jacqui even showed up!

When it finally came time to show the film, everyone packed into the bar and they even stood out the door. As it played no one spoke a word; we were truly speechless. So here’s to Speyer; huge thanks to all the rulers who came out for the event. It was truly our pleasure to have met you. Big thanks to Dynamite and Custombike Magazines, the Flaming Star, and Dickies for making such a fantastic night.

On a side note I wanted to relate another story from the evening. We had the pleasure of meeting a couple of American guys who had been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of them mentioned that Choppertown had gotten him and his boys through a lot of shit and they used to turn it up full volume to help them unwind after many a tough day in the field. He said it was an honor to meet us and we had only one thing to say; it’s an honor to meet him. Regardless of where you fall on the political side of the fence, those men and women go through a lot and we wish them all a safe return. Hope to see you guys on the road again soon.

ALERT - Sleepy Mountain Town Invaded by Triumph Biker Fanatics (Tridays)

Neukirchen, Austria – We drove up and up and up and finally arrived in the picturesque little town of Newchurch in Tirol, Austria. Didn’t even realize it was so high up, but St. Lutz’s trusty little steed bore us all expertly to the top. I kid you not; the peaks surrounding our villa were snow capped and mist laden. It had been pouring rain all day and we were a bit down, but there was a hint of something in the air. As we wandered up Main Street past billowing Union Jacks and a sign reading “Underground” we began to feel a bit more out of sorts than usual...this is Austria, right? Then a brand new Triumph Triple came screaming past; and another, and another. The invasion had begun...

Tridays occurs once a year and is the brainchild of filmmaker and Triumph lover, Uli Bree. Fifteen years ago he organized his first rally in this sleepy little town and now it attracts 20,000 Triumph riders over a single weekend. It’s almost impossible to imagine and even harder to describe, so I’ll just post a string of words that come to mind and get to the pics.

Ascend, wet, crevasse, tired, lost, winding, cabin, warmth, crisp, breathe, RPMs, Triple, Thruxton, beer, BBQ, music, wind, slam dance, Jagermeister, exhaustion, Brittown, friends, more, sleep, again, sausages, biscuits, again, goodbyes, descend, continue, the road...

(Many thanks to Tridays for inviting us to partake in the madness and kindest wishes to Herr and Frau Keller for opening their home and their hearts.)
